A first look at adjective endings: der große Tisch, ein großer Tisch.
Two cases first
Before a noun the adjective takes an ending. Start with nominative and accusative.
After the definite article (der, die, das)
| Masc. | Fem. | Neut. | Plural | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nom | der große Tisch | die große Lampe | das große Haus | die großen Häuser |
| Acc | den großen Tisch | die große Lampe | das große Haus | die großen Häuser |
After the indefinite article (ein, eine)
| Masc. | Fem. | Neut. | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nom | ein großer Tisch | eine große Lampe | ein großes Haus |
| Acc | einen großen Tisch | eine große Lampe | ein großes Haus |
Memory aid
If the article already shows gender and case, the adjective takes -e or -en. If the article does not (ein Tisch, ein Haus), the adjective shows it: -er, -es.
For dative and genitive see the B1 lessons on adjective endings.
