Modal Particles
doch, mal, eben, halt, ja, wohl: sound natural in conversation.
What they do
Modal particles add attitude (emphasis, softening, surprise). They rarely translate directly.
| Particle | Typical effect | Example |
|---|---|---|
| doch | contradiction, gentle insistence | Das ist doch klar! |
| mal | softens requests | Komm mal her. |
| ja | shared knowledge / surprise | Du hast ja recht. |
| eben / halt | resignation: "that's how it is" | Das ist halt so. |
| wohl | assumption | Er ist wohl krank. |
| denn | interest in questions | Wie geht's dir denn? |
| eigentlich | polite curiosity | Wie heißt du eigentlich? |
Tips
- Use them in speaking, not in formal writing.
- Position: in the middle field, after the verb and pronouns.
- Listen for them in series and films and copy complete sentences.
