Subordinate Clauses
weil, dass, wenn, obwohl: verb at the end.
Conjunctions that send the verb to the end
| Conjunction | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| weil | because | Ich lerne, weil ich in Berlin arbeiten möchte. |
| dass | that | Ich glaube, dass er recht hat. |
| wenn | if / whenever | Wenn du Zeit hast, ruf mich an. |
| ob | whether | Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt. |
| obwohl | although | Er geht, obwohl er müde ist. |
| damit | so that | Ich spare, damit ich reisen kann. |
| als | when (past, once) | Als ich klein war, ... |
Order rule
If the subordinate clause comes first, it counts as position 1, so the main verb comes next: Weil ich müde bin, gehe ich ins Bett.
Compound verbs
Perfect and modals: the conjugated verb is last: ..., weil ich gestern gearbeitet habe.
