wenn: If and Whenever

Meaning

wenn = if (a condition) or whenever (a repeated event).

• Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause. (If it rains ...)
• Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee. (Whenever I am tired ...)

Word order

Order	Example
Main clause first	Wir bleiben zu Hause, wenn es regnet.
wenn-clause first	Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.

• In the wenn-clause the verb goes to the end.
• If the wenn-clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb (position 1 after the comma).
