als, wenn, bevor: Time Clauses
Connect events in time and choose the right word.
Choosing the word
| Word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| als | one event or period in the past | Als ich in Berlin wohnte, hatte ich ein Fahrrad. |
| wenn | present, future, or repeated events (also past habits) | Wenn ich Zeit habe, lese ich. |
| bevor | before | Ich frage dich, bevor ich gehe. |
| nachdem | after (the verb in the clause is earlier) | Nachdem ich gegessen habe, gehe ich spazieren. |
Word order
All four send the conjugated verb to the end of their clause. If the clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb:
- Als ich ankam, regnete es.
- Bevor er geht, ruft er an.
