B1 · grammar
B1.01 Perfekt or Präteritum?
Choose the right past tense when you speak and when you write.
Quick rule
| Situation | Tense | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday conversation | Perfekt | Ich habe gestern Pizza gegessen. |
| Stories, news, reports | Präteritum | Er ging nach Hause und schlief sofort ein. |
| sein, haben, modal verbs | Präteritum (always) | Ich war müde. Wir hatten Zeit. Sie musste arbeiten. |
Notes
- The Perfekt is built with haben or sein + Partizip II: ich bin gefahren, ich habe gemacht.
- In the south (Austria, Bavaria, Switzerland) the Perfekt is used even more in writing and speaking.
- Many strong verbs are common in the Präteritum: ging, kam, sah, gab, nahm.
Practice
Tell what you did yesterday in the Perfekt, then write the same in a short story in the Präteritum.
